A panel for the talented miss Shelby Johnson...(aka SHMAJO)

This is a panel I did as a trade with fellow artist Shelby Johnson also known as Shmajo. I did some grind work on an aluminum panel and then did a rainbow effect using House of Kolor candies. For the lettering I used green varigated gold leaf and for the stripes I used a custom mix of lime green and light blue.

Two really cool bikes...

I have been busy as of lately and haven't updated this as much as I should but here are some of my most recent jobs...the Black metric chopper was built by Tony Colluci of Colluci Customs and features Rose Pink and Baby Blue stripes and the Honda Goldwing trike belongs to Dave Davis, a retired military vet that I have a tremendous amount of respect for. They were both super fun jobs to do and I appreciate both...and for good measure I included a picture of my beautiful daughter Lailah having a blast with Skip a Sock whom she LOVES! Thanks for perusing my ramblings! :)

Here are some of the trophies I painted and striped for the Keep On Rollin car show this Sunday! There are a few more that I painted but didn't get time to stripe and I'll post pics of them once I get pictures...I'm hoping my Buddies Matt, Courtney or Creep fixed them up with some stripes! :) Speaking of that, Matt did the Blue stripes on the big Red piston and I did the Tan ones...collaboration at it's best on the best of show trophy! ;) If anyone is in town this weekend you should come to this show...It's a super fun, family oriented show for a good cause!

Here is a recently finished panel I did with a ton of Silver metal flake to give it the old skool look and then to finish it off I made a custom blue and ochre yellow...I am getting my stuff ready for the Rat Fink Reunion once again so I will post it when I'm done...For the charity auction I have a pretty cool wagon that I painted Rat Fink Green and I will have some other prizes finished up as well! :)

I have been seeing some beautiful panels on Pinhead Lounge lately so I decided to try my hand at painting a more artistic panel than I usually do. I did a metal ground design and then kandy coated it before striping it with a Lime Green and Process Green. I want to add another color to the stripe design so hopefully I will figure out what color to do in the next day or two...

My body shop is having our first annual car show and we want everyone to come! If you have a hot rod or a cool truck or a motorcycle...anything bring it down and have a good time with us! Terry's Micro Truck...

Here is a rare and unusual little truck that my buddy Terry owns. It is an imported Micro truck from Japan. Terry is a painter and when he is done with his projects I get a call to come and stripe them and I am very thankful because I love his work! This little truck was so fun to stripe just because I've never really seen anything like it.
I outlined the flames with Silver and Magenta and then did a simple stripe design on the hood.

It's Autorama time again! I spent Friday night and all day today hanging out with my brothers of the brush raising money for Hugs For Life. It has been a very positive and rewarding experience again this year. I get to help raise interest in an artform which I am passionate about and help raise money for a cause which I am every bit as passionate about! I even was the winning bidder on a Genuine Geno piece which I will add on here later!

I will update again with more pics from Autorama but for now my life is good, I am blessed with a beautiful family, great friends, art and the opportunity to give back! (so far I believe the work that Matt, Josh and I have done has earned around a thousand bucks for Hugs! )

A little different...

So I'm trying something a little different. For the panel I used some Tangelo Pearl Orange paint and some Orange flake from Bling Flake. For design work I used some Green varegated Gold leaf and I was going to do traditional stripes but as anyone knows, sometimes the "minds eye" leads you on a different path and this is what I have so far...I'm still not done with it but I can't decide what color or colors will work with this piece. :)

My Boss Eric has been putting a little shop truck together to go cruise and have some fun with and hopefully be a rolling business card for us at the same time. It's a 1946 Ford and it has such great character.
Eric took his family on a vacation this week so I thought it would be the perfect time to paint it up and surprise him. I did another "patina" paint job on the truck with a Red metal flake panel on the back of the cab for some added texture.
Once the body was painted I enlisted the help of my super talented friend Matt Wood to help with some door art and lettering and his work really gives this little truck some attitude! Many thanks to Matt! :)

Yes Andy, There is a Santa Clause...

Maybe not my usual post but a story that I think needs to be told...

My Grandpa was and is one of my my biggest hero's. He was a good man with a heart so big. I have many great memories and it's sad because I feel like some of them are already starting to blur. He left this mortal plain on September 24th 2005 and left one big empty hole for many; especially my mother who had grown so close to him in his later years and had become his "caregiver" if that's what you could even call someone who gave so endlessly of everything she had...and my uncle Steve who I have seen many night's at my grandpa's grave just sitting there alone and who still keeps his horse's in my grandpa's pasture - more I think for grandpa than as just a place to keep them. :) and of coarse my beautiful grandma Mary who misses "her man" so much it hurts to look at her when she is in thought.

Now you know what this man means to this family so here is my story...as we grow older I think that Christmas loses some of it's magic. It's a tragic part of growing up I guess. Instead of being a bright eyed kid who can't sleep and keeps looking out the window to spy a glimpse of Santa we turn into adult's and reality sets in. There are bills to pay, jobs that need attention, families to raise...the daily grind so to speak. So there it is, the magic lost and in it's place gifts or cards, shiny things, maybe some other material object which we use to fill that void.

I was blessed with the best gift of all this year when my beautiful daughter Lailah was born. Since this is her first Christmas I have been trying hard to find the spirit of the season and truthfully sometimes it felt more tedious than "magical"...and that is really sad on my part! It's not that I don't like Christmas, in fact I love it - I think I just got caught up in all the "hussle and bussle" way with which we treat things now.

Well here it is Christmas Eve 2010. We had just arrived home from a Christmas get together with my in-laws house and walked in the door and what do we see? my family had gone nuts with the presents and we had even more under the tree than when we left. There were even two fancy wreaths made of real pine that made the house smell good. I immediately started to wonder if what we had done would be enough, not that they would ever compare gift's but that's my point, when we start worrying about stuff like that the magic is gone.

Well I was walking out to our mailbox and something made me take another direction. I found myself standing at the foot of my parents drive way staring blankly at a lighted train my grandpa use to display proudly in his yard at Christmas time. I was just standing there looking at the lights for reasons I still don't know and all of a sudden a little wind catcher decoration my dad had hung in the tree above the train set started to twirl. The crazy thing is that there were several of these windcatchers (anyone who knows my dad knows that if one decoration is cool then a hundred of them is even better). Anyway, this single ornament is just twirling like crazy above my grandpa's train and it hit me...this was the good shepherd tending his flock. My beloved grandfather had made a visit to me! I think he knew that my faith needed to be restored, that I needed to have that Christmas spirit back in my life. I think he knows that I haven't been feeling it this year for some reason and I have been taking a lot of things for granted. Well grandpa, message received! Loud and clear! This little "visit" brought it all home. I have a true understanding of Christmas once again... It's not about present's, not really about giving or receiving, not about material things. It's about knowing that there is something else out there that is bigger than me, bigger than all of us. It's the celebration of Christ and keeping him in our hearts. It's about knowing that the ones we love who are gone are not really 'gone', they are still around us and they look over us and protect us.

This made me relize how truely blessed I am. I have been given the best gift of all...a family which loves me and whom I love deeply. Mom, Dad, Riss I don't say it often enough but I love you and I appreciate all that you do. I apologize for taking you for granted. The same to Tami, Frank and Ryan. Michelle, you're the best wife anyone could have. You're my best friend, I love you so much and you gave me my beautiful baby who is the light of my life...Grandpa, thank you for giving me this opportunity to remember what matters. I know your not gone and I know that you look over all of us and love us, (something your family needs to remember)

Gone, but not forgotton...

Everyone that knows me knows that I am the biggest American history buff ever...I would actually like to be an American history teacher (when I grow up) :) but I thought it appropriate to pay tribute to one of my personal hero's today. Today, November 22 marks the 47th anniversary of John Fitzgerald Kennedy's assassination.
I was not alive during JFK's time but I have always been fascinated by him. I do believe that he made America a better place and that his ideal's were just.
I grew up on stories of him from parents and grandparents...I don't know anyone from that generation that can't remember the day he was killed like it happened yesterday. Forty seven years gone and it is still a raw nerve for so many.
I imagine 9/11 will be the same way for those that experienced it as well...almost Ten years and it is still an open wound, And I still remember that day exactly like it was yesterday.

It's been a pretty great year as far as my pinstriped Christmas ornaments are concerned! I've already sold a bunch of sets and there are a lot more under the tree that are ready to go! :)

So I was asked recently to come and stripe at a charity car show that was being held for a little girl in need of a heart transplant. Usually at these type of shows I will just set up and stripe and donate the money that I make but this year was a little different...after having my beautiful little daughter it got me thinking, there is nothing I would not do to keep her safe and healthy so I just had to help out...My good friend Matt Wood has a big heart as well so I knew he would be on board to help, and help he did...
I had a wagon that I had custom painted and I was going to sell it on ebay but when I found out about this little girl I decided we could donate this wagon in a raffle and try to get some good money for her so I asked Matt to "do a little lettering or something on the wagon" and two days later he delivered it to my house and to my surprise he had invented the "Dragon Wagon". Matt's specialty is lettering and if you can't tell, he freakin rocks at it! I can honestly say that this wagon was not half as special as it was when Matt was done with it and he really gave it the "personality" so everyone needs to go over to Matts blog and give him a big high five...or atleast give him some crap and tell him to update his blog! ;)

I have been privileged to meet people in the art world who I don't think really realize how amazing they are and Matt Wood is definitely one of them. He called me up one day and said, "hey Andy, I'm gonna make you a banner for the car shows"
I was expecting something cool since everything Matt does is amazing but this banner is indescribable! I swear the guy has more talent in his little finger than most of us do in our whole bodies!!! His son Josh is getting pretty good in his own right and they have a cool blog spot that I think everyone should check out...if your a fan of pinstriping art or kustom kulture at all their work will inspire you! Sorry about the delay's in updating this thing! I know a lot of people like to check out this page and see what's new with my paint...and my life sometimes, and I thank everyone who cares! :) So without further ado, here are my update's!

I included the collage my wife made of my beautiful little girl because it makes me laugh...hard! :) She is the Great Hambino!

Other than that is a new Midnight Harley that I did for my buddy Dave at West Side Auto, as well as the Black Snap On tool box. I did some new business card holders that are in some of the local bike shops around here and there are some shots from the Keep On Rollin show including an action shot of me striping the Harley and my buddy Matt, or "Mark" if your in the know, doing the most killer letter work ever! There are also some items that I donated for the charity raffle and then once again I got the honor, and I do mean honor of striping Frank Rudy's little 40 Ford truck. So things have been a little hectic since my little one blessed me with her presence this time last week but my wife was a trooper today and allowed me to go finish some paint work that I had to do for a charity car show that's coming up. These are some massive CAT pistons that my buddy Ryan got and made into trophies. I did the custom paint work and I'm still going to stripe them up but I gotta wait till the clear is a little harder!

We have established that I have an affinity for classic Chevy's...This is Rod Jones fine example and it is baaad! It kinda reminds me of the 36 Ford Cole Foster built for Kirk Hammett. The two toned black looks amazing on this car and I am so thankful that he chose me to add the only color on it's exterior; I did a two tone job of bright Red and Tan. There is a cluster design on the hood and trunk and I did a stripe down the side of the car as well.

Rod is a master upholsterer and he has excellent prices as well. If you should ever need anything done his contact info is 801-376-0608...make sure and tell him Andy sent ya! ;)

So in my journeys I have painted a lot of fun stuff for my friends Maradee and Daryle. I was pretty excited when I got a phone call from Daryle wondering if I could paint another snowmobile hood for him...or for his friend! Thank you so much for the call, I really appreciate anyone that spreads my name around like that! :)

So to cut to the chase, I painted the whole hood Red and then put about 20 coat's of Red metal flake on it. After that I marbleized it with pearl black and then did a little stripe work.

I sure hope you like this paint job and if anyone needs anything done, please let me know! :)

I received several calls from some buddies this weekend to do their bikes...First was Bob's Vulcan. I did a bike a lot like this one for him last year and he just bought this baby and needed it personalized...Second was a rare treat. It's a vintage Harley that my buddy Terry painted. I did some subtle outlining and a repeating dagger pattern throughout the whole bike. Thank you guys so much for the calls and we will see ya at the shows!

Completely off the pinstriping subject but as anyone who knows me can vouch, I am Dodgers fan #1...I was born into this by way of my mom and dad and now my baby girl will be too! :) I can't wait to get her a little pink Dodgers jersey!

Um, The season opener is in about two weeks and we play the Indians so Manny better be in top form!

This weekend was sooo fun...a little draining but very fun! I feel like the stripers are a second family for me. Everyone is so nice and willing to share knowledge. The older guys who have been there and done that, like Bruno and Creep, the mid range guys like Mark Wood and the young guys on the block like KC, Josh and me all get along and share experiences! I never got a final tally on how much we raised this weekend but I know that Ilene Roth threw about two or three grand alone at this charity so we all owe her a great big thank you when we see her! She bought several of my pieces this year and I can't tell you how excited I am to know that some of my work will be displayed at the museum!

I met Charlie Hutton and he actually told me that he liked my work...what a compliment!
Mark Wood gave me a Leonardo's customs shirt that is totally awesome!
Ilene Roth gave me another Rat Fink shirt...I live in these things!
This was a great experience for me and I already can't wait for next year!!!

Autorama....

Well I got my wish...sorta! We are finally coming out of the Winter season and into spring but much to my surprise, we woke this morning to nearly one foot of snow on the ground...what a crazy state!

Anyway, the Autorama is here and I am going to be a guest artist in the pinstriping booth this weekend. I am REALLY excited! I was asked to donate a few striped items for the charity auction benefiting Hugs for Life so here are the things I striped. Everything we stripe this weekend goes to this great charity so everyone come out and support the cause! :)

Here's my new project. This will be my "shop truck" until my Apache is done. So far I've just tried to make it more mine with a mild lowering job and some paint work. Inspiration struck the night before I was going to paint it and we decided to go with a Forest Service theme...my uncle Bern L would be proud! I'm not done with the paint yet, I still have some distressing and pinstriping to do but I couldn't wait to share my new truck! I always get excited with a new one!

So my buddy Rhett is a guitarist and he is having a custom guitar built by my other buddy Jared who is a guitar expert...somehow in the middle of this madness I was asked to do a custom paint and pinstripe job. I started out by painting the guitar black and then marbling it with color change pearl paint. Follow that with some airbrush work and about eight coats of clear...and of coarse some freestyle stripes!

I hope you enjoy it Rhett...you better drop my name in your next album credits! ;)

A new face...

This entry really doesn't have anything to do with pinstriping per say...well, maybe a little bit. :) My new logo for my blog is a truck I recently acquired that I am turning into my "shop truck"...The header/logo as usual is courtesy of my wife Michelle...mad props to her! So new face on my blog and a soon to be new face in my life as well.

We found out yesterday that we are having a baby girl!!! The due date is June 13, and we went and picked her up some Pink Chuck Taylors yesterday! We already have names written down too. Michelle is stuck on Sophie and Madeline and I'm hooked on Lux or Langley for now...feel free to weigh in or give suggestions! :)

As a pinstriper I feel like I owe a lot to those that came before me...I have been practicing my Rat Fink's and I am finally getting good enough that people want them! This one was created for Mark in Thousand Oaks California...Thanks to Mark as well, for all the nice words. It's not quite finished yet, as it will have a distressed look on the edges but it's almost there!

I feel like it needs to be summer...I miss warm, even hot, I miss car shows, I miss softball etc...I finally have a "shop truck" I will be taking to the shows and I'll post pics of it soon! :)

As is tradition every year at the Rat Fink Reunion, The artist's give out an "Artist's Choice" award to their favorite vehicle at the show. I thought I would get a jump on mine since my life is about to get a whole lot more exciting, and I'm not sure I will have time to do it once my bambino arrives! :) This years "trophy" from me is a metal panel that features my man Fink doing some ca-razy stripe and letter work...and to finish it off I also distressed the panel so it looks like it was hanging in Ed's shop in Maywood California back in the early sixties. I hope whoever receives this enjoys it as it was a labor of love to make! :)

Christmas is fast approaching and it's time to start decorating...(at least at my house) so I have done something for my fellow hot rodders. These are turning into somewhat of a tradition as I make them every year! :) Hand striped ornaments. They are flat black with more festive color combination's...and yes, custom orders can be done for no additional cost. That's right, choose any colors you want, if you want a name or initials on them, whatever. They are ten for twenty bucks! If you want anything else striped in time for Christmas such as other ornaments, toys etc...let me know and I should be able to have them done with time to spare!

Driving down the Miracle Mile....

Greetings everyone, meet Kent's little 29' cruiser. This car reminds me of the early days of hot rodding. (not that I'm old enough to actually know)...but you get the picture. This car drips nostalgia from front to back. It's got the great high boy look and the period correct wheels and tires. What more could you ask for? How bout some old skool stripes, and that is where I come in. All in all I think it came out pretty kool and it improved the overall "aura" of this little time capsule! In the near future I will be putting some lettering on this car and maybe, just maybe, some flames!

For everyone not in "the know" "Hey That's My Bike" is the fictitious name of a band in one of my favorite movies...but I will let ya'll figure that one out on your own! ;) It is the perfect title for this weeks installment however!

Halloween is almost here! Summers over...what a drag! No more car shows, outdoor activities etc... time for hibernation! What a better way to end the season than throwing paint at a little topless T bucket! This thing is a wild ride. It oozes some pretty killer 70's nostalgia. I did a bunch of ol skool stripes on it and it sounds like this winter it's getting a makeover. No more rear fenders and turbine wheels...sounds like a pretty awesome improvement! :) There is a reason the 70's went away...I however will still quietly respect the mullett! ;) Thanks for letting me stripe on this little piece of history Derek!

Better than Throwback Mountain Dew...

First off, any of you that know me know that I hold the 53-56 Ford F-100 (or 'effie' as they are lovingly nick named) in my heart! My first vehicle when I turned 16 was a 55 Ford F-100. They are my favorite trucks so imagine how excited I was to work on such a fine specimen!

This is Ryan Hadden's 54 Ford and it is the best example of what a traditional truck should be that I have had the privilege to work on! It has a satin white finish that is awesome, the perfect tire and wheel combo etc...

I did some simple stripe work on the hood and some door art on you guessed it...the doors! I have to give credit where credit is due so thanks to my wife and to Ryan for helping me out with the logo...it still needs another coat of red but the logo is simply perfect on this truck!

Ahhh...the life of a "striper"

So last week my friend Frank wanted me to do some more stripes on his 1940 Ford truck...AWESOME!!! This truck has a ton of character and sits just right! Thanks for letting me work on your truck Frank!

Its Saturday night at the cowabunga household and things are getting crazy! :) We decided it would be a good idea to try and stripe Michelle's legs...low and behold it worked! It actually turned out pretty damn cool if I do say so myself and now its giving us ideas for Halloween, our favorite holiday! :) What a tough job I have working on a beautiful womans legs! ;)

New Friends in Duchesne...

So I got a call from a guy named Casey that wanted some work done in Duchesne...(for those non Utahns, it's pronounced "do shane" anyway, I was not really expecting to find one of the coolest rods I've seen down there but low and behold...I did. His 1929 Dodge sedan is too kool, and I'm stoked that I was chosen to stripe it! It was a busy weekend down there as I also did his Buddy's 1960 Chevy which is awesome as well and I did some golf clubs for them as well! Anyone that looks at "Ol Skool Rodz" will recognize the little Finkie eyes that bug out at the cover models! ;)
I was told that I will have more stuff to do in Duchesne when other see the stripes so I'll be keeping my fingers crossed!

Baby's got a brand new bag!

My wife got a new 2010 Mazda 3 a couple weeks ago and what better way to really personalize it than with some stripes! Now she can represent everywhere she goes! I anticipate some people will see the old skool work on this new car and not understand it...if they aren't in the know, we aint gonna tell em right? ;)
I also did a helmet for my buddy Bob in West Valley...His house took gun fire a week ago and his beloved hot rod was injured but he says I get to restripe it for him when it gets back from the shop~ Peace, Love and Stripes!

I went to the Sunset City car show this past weekend where I had the opportunity to stripe my friend Kelly's daughters car. It's a 59 Impala that is bad to the bone! It has loads of character and now it's really ready to represent with a two tone stripe job! I also did a couple pairs of sneakers that turned out pretty kool so I threw them in for ya to look at as well! Thanks again for letting me work my mojo on your cars...and sneakers! I recently had the opportunity to not only pinstripe, but do the entire custom paint job on one of my best friends bikes. Rowdy, my friend has a rather exuberant personality and I wanted his paint to match his personality...a little larger than life! :) Anyway, I started by painting the whole bike black. From there that's when the fun started. I did a smoke/marble technique with color shifting paint, light airbrush work, some free hand and some Craig Frazer stencils, a flame job on the front fender and tank, static pinstriping around the flames, old skool pinstriping on the rear fender and then a mile of deep shiny clear! You can probably see my wife Mitch taking the pictures in some of the photos! :) This was a fun bike to do and I appreciate all the kind words I have received about it so far! Rowdy, I hope you enjoy it buddy!

My buddy Jarem asked me to doll up this beachcomber bike this week. It's actually a brand new bike but it looks like it came straight from the 50's. It's color is probably the best looking robin egg blue that I have ever seen and since it's for his wife Amy, magenta, ivory and robin egg blue stripes were in order. I hope you guys like it! :)
On another note I think I need to get a bike like this in flat black~

Rat Fink Reunion 2009

Second Day of the Rat Fink Reunion '09, getting ready to head out and Mama K took a picture of me and my beautiful wife.

Laying some stripe on the hood of a truck with no stabilo lines, for the first time! And I must say it was a little nerve-racking. Trial by fire I guess. It ended up turning out pretty good.

I also laid some stripe on this helmet.

This was my first year pinstriping at the show, and I was able to hand out an award for 'Artist's Choice'. I chose a '23 Ford Bucket, with a cool bomber seat and airplane rivets on the dash. It had some imaginative styling, it was awesome.

This year was by far the best year. Being a first year pinstriper (4th year at the show itself) everyone is so nice and welcoming. I look forward to many years to come. Thanks to Ilene for all the hard work that goes into making each year special.

More Miscellanous...

Here are a few more miscellaneous items I have pinstriped.

Everyone needs to have some pinstriped ornaments on their Christmas Tree! These are non-breakable flat black ornaments with a little bit of character added to them. The going rate for these is 10 Ornaments for $20 or $2.50 each. There are lots of different ones to choose from and they can be custom ordered with colors of your choice. Names can also be pinstriped onto the ornaments. Woo Hoo

These are basically 'presentation' style boards that have been pinstriped, and they would look righteous hanging in your garage! They go for $15.00 each.

These are handy little cans for storing nick-knacks or nuts & bolts. Lots of different ones to choose from, and as with the others can be customized as you would like. Pick one up, their $5.00 each.

Now, what cool chick wouldn't dig a pinstriped purse? These are high-quality, never been used purses that have been 'accessorized'. Get your lovely lady one for $30.00 each. Or, if there is a purse that she really likes, or one that they have already, we can do that as well. Depending on the amount of pinstriping done, prices may vary.

And last but not least for today, here is an old tool-box with some flare. This one here is going for $30.00. Rates for toolboxes vary depending on how much I paid for the box. This would look great in the back of a rat rod or hanging out in a hot rod garage.

This weekend was spent pinstriping a Honda Rebel for Bob in West Valley City. It was a lot of fun, and I think it turned out pretty good. I did a two-color paint scheme to go with existing graphics, and tried to flow the lines to the bikes contours. Here are some pics my lovely wife took throughout the process.

Time to hop on the blog wagon. My name is Andy and pinstriping is the name of my game.

This here is my first post with hopefully lots more to come of some of my adventures, maybe some blunders, and all things pinstriped. So all a-board, here we go!

I enjoy all things kustom and old skool, so imagine my delight when I got asked to pinstripe this fine specimen! A 48 Chevy Fleetline for Rick Hunter, garage builder extraordinaire. As one of my favorites at all of the car shows, I was super excited to stripe this baby.

I also recently worked on a beautiful 31 Ford Truck. This little thing had so much character! I love the patina and old Shell Logo. This was probably one of my favorites to pinstripe to date.

Other fun pinstriped goodies include jackets, bikes, purses, cans, vases, Christmas ornaments and other items galore.

More fun stuff to come later.
